Jesus is Born

in Advent 2012

We have come to the time which God had destined from the day of His promise to Adam and Eve.  Jesus is born, incarnate of the Virgin Mary, the one who will crush evil  and bring release to captives , the one who will care for the poor and needy, who will give sight to the blind and strength to the weak.  The one who will shepherd his people Israel into the promised land of God’s kingdom.

Creator of the Universe, God become man in a stable, teach me the meaning of life. Teach me what it means that you became man to show us the way back to the heavenly Father.  Help me to understand that your kingdom is not hereafter, that your kingdom begins here on earth in the hearts of those who follow you.  Let me do my part to make that kingdom come here on earth as it is in heaven.  You became human that I might share in your Divinity.  Let it be done to me according to your word.  Amen.

Bethlehem was a small town of no great significance.  It was however, the home of the family of David, the ancestors of Jesus.  It was to Bethlehem that Joseph was called to go by the edict of the Emperor.  And so the prophecy was fulfilled that Bethlehem would truly be the house of bread – the birthplace of the Bread of Life.

Holy God, It is true that we often judge the importance of things by size or monetary value.  You have a different way of judging importance.  The role we play in life is important, not because of the money we make or the power we have.  It is important because it fulfills your will.  In the eyes of the world, we may always be insignificant, but if we fulfill your purpose, then our role becomes Divine.

John’s role was to prepare the way for his cousin.  How would it be to know that you are not the important one?  That you will always walk in the shadow of someone younger than you?  That you will lose your disciples in favor of another?  That you will ultimately lose you head for the [more…]

In all three of the Abrahamic traditions, angels are seen as an aspect or action of God.  Gabriel is God’s messenger who appears both in the Hebrew and the Christian Scriptures. Gabriel is entrusted with the message for Mary that she will be the mother of the  Lord.  Often when angels appear, their first words are “Fear [more…]

God sent Jonah to preach repentance to the Ninevites, but Jonah did not want to see God’s mercy shown to these people.  So he fled from God but was blamed for the harsh weather that was battering his ship.  He was thrown overboard, swallowed by a whale, and spit up on the shores of Ninevah. Finally, giving [more…]
