St. Julie Billiart, spiritual mother of the Sisters of Notre Dame, said, “We are not called to do all the good in the world – just the good that is before us.” This is a freeing statement. We are not the Messiah. We are not asked to do the impossible. We are each called just to make our contribution. This can be as simple as putting flowers on the table in the dining room, making the coffee in the morning before going off to work, bringing in the newspaper from the front porch, bringing an interesting story to the dinner table.
Life is made up of the little things. Do I contribute wherever I go? Do I bring a little ray of sunshine to others, or do I wait for others to make life pleasant for me? My life will be as good as I decide to make it. Being a contributor will ensure that I make my life one where the care for others’ well-being is a priority.
