in Advent 2012

John’s role was to prepare the way for his cousin.  How would it be to know that you are not the important one?  That you will always walk in the shadow of someone younger than you?  That you will lose your disciples in favor of another?  That you will ultimately lose you head for the sake of another?  This was John’s lot.  He described himself as a voice crying in the wilderness.  He recognized his place in the great scheme of things.

Dear God, teach me the humility to recognize my gifts and not to compare myself with others.  Help me to understand that you call each of us to be someone who does your will but that your will for each of us requires different gifts to be used in different ways. The building of your kingdom requires that we each do the part that you have given to us.  Each one of us plays an important role in building up that kingdom.
