Thank you to the 5th grade Junior Girl Scouts of North East Ohio 71176 of Independence! On Saturday, May 5 the Girl Scout Troop came to complete their Bronze Award Project: they installed two new bookshelves and a new bookrack in our Rec Room that they designed and built themselves. Not only did they provide these new furnishings, they also donated books, puzzles and games for us to enjoy. We held an ice cream social to celebrate, and the girls helped serve ice cream to residents.
The Bronze Award Project is the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can achieve. To earn the Bronze Award, Junior Girl Scouts work as a team to take action and bring about sustainable change to their community.
Girl Scout Sarah Christian has a personal connection: her great grandmother, Mary, resides at Jennings. The troop visited our recreation room and learned that the residents needed more storage for their puzzles and games. They also talked to the staff and found out that they wanted picture books so that they could read books with the children from The Learning Circle at Jennings, our on-site day infant and child care.
Mary Biliunas, Sarah Christian, Molly Dubitsky, Haley Hutchison, Ella Krogman, Sara Luciano, Emily Novak, Alyssa Rzeszut, and Mikayla Yonish planned a project where they built 2 bookshelves and collected games, puzzles, and books. Under the guidance of Steve Rzeszut, the girls learned woodworking skills by cutting boards, drilling holes, sanding, painting, and assembling 2 bookshelves. They made and sold slime at the Independence Holiday Fest in order to raise funds for purchasing an additional book rack. The Girl Scouts also ran a collection drive at the Independence Primary and Middle Schools to collect donations of picture books, puzzles, card games, and board games.
During Saturday’s ice cream social in Jennings’ Rec Room, the girls helped serve ice cream to residents. They installed the new bookshelves and bookrack and filled them with the books, puzzles, and games they had collected. What a wonderful experience, not only for the Girl Scouts and their families but also for Jennings’ residents and family members.
Several people helped make this project possible: Scott Dubitsky and Russ Krogman helped with construction of the bookshelves. Jacqueline Hutchison secured donation of lumber and materials for the bookshelves from Servpro. Bridget Biliunas coordinated the collection drive. Troop 71176 is led by Irene Christian and Sally Dubitsky.
