Happy Older Americans Month!

Across the country, adults over 65 are taking part in activities that promote wellness and social connection. They are sharing their wisdom and experience with future generations, and they are giving back to make enrich their communities. Like you, they working and volunteering, mentoring and learning, leading and engaging.

For 55 years, Older Americans Month (OAM) has been observed to recognize older Americans and their contributions to our communities. Led by the Administration for Community Living’s Administration on Aging, every May offers opportunity to hear from, support, and celebrate our nation’s elders. This year’s OAM theme, “Engage at Every Age,” emphasizes the importance of being active and involved, no matter where or when you are in life. You are never too old (or too young) to participate in activities that can enrich your physical, mental, and emotion well-being.

“Every day I spend with a resident at Jennings I learn why life is so important and how life keeps changing,” says Danielle Palucsak, Director of Life Enrichment at Jennings. “People are 80, 90, 100 years old and they want to be active and part of something. They keep learning and doing—it’s so inspirational. Someone told me the other week: ‘It’s my choice; I can sit in my suite every day or I can engage with you and love my life.’ To be a part of something, big or small, is recognizing the meaning of life. Everyone has a part and is still needed.”

Research is showing that remaining socially engaged can improve the quality of life for every individual. Jennings will use Older Americans Month to focus on how individuals who are living or receiving services at Jennings are engaging with friends and family, participating in various community activities, being involved in lifelong learning, or practicing talents. We encourage you to get involved in activities, or participate in our goal to share stories and advice from residents. If you would like to share your story or advice, please call Lisa at (216) 581-2900, ext. 2297 for more information.

You and your families can also participate in the Selfie Challenge with a photo! We want to see how you’re engaging. Simply take a selfie or have someone take your photo in social media or email it to marketing@jenningsohio.org so we can share it with the hashtag #OAM18. Check out more stories on our Facebook page.
